The photo was taken when Einstein celebrated his 72nd birthday. After the party, he got into his car. Photographer Arthur Sasse took a picture, unexpectedly Einstein stuck out his tongue after the photographer took the photo, which was caught by the photographer. The original photo is larger, with Einstein's friends also in the photo. Apparently Einstein was happy with the photo and put it in a greeting card.
